Feverfew Double Pom-Pom - Chrysanthemum parthenium
Feverfew is an amazing workhorse in the easy care garden. It has fern-like foliage and small double cream flowers with yellow centers spring through fall. Prefers full sun and well drained soil and can reach a height of up to 2+ feet. It blooms in partial sun, but can get leggy and less upright. Feverfew tea made with the flowers is used to treat headaches and arthritis pain. It's also very nice in a garden bouquet. Hardy to Z6.
Heuchera 'Midnight Rose' ppaf
One of the newest and hottest Heucheras. Of course if we're going to sell a Heuchera it's going to have "rose" in it somewhere and we're so glad we picked this one! Compact, darkest leaves are spotted hot pink in the spring, then fade to cream and pink dots in summer. Small shoot of bell-shaped blooms is pretty insignificant come summer. Mostly sun to part shade, so perfect under a rose bush! We've even been growing one nicely indoors in the sunny office window, but we think one of its main glories is the way it offsets everything else green in the garden. 1 x 1 ft Z4
Japanese Anemone, Japanese Windflower, Japanese Thimbleflower - Anemone 'Prince Henry'
A semi-double flower in a lovely shade of light lilac pink. 'Prince Henry' is a plant that I grow in both full sun and almost full shade, though it performs differently in each, both are useful for the landscape. In full sun the clump reaches nearly 3' tall and almost as wide, sending flower spikes 4+' in the air in late summer. The large leaves are less deep green than the plant in shade, and the one in shade actually bloomed first this year. It has not been invasive in either situation, probably because the soil is mostly silty clay. Like other clumpers, they can be separated every few years. Another plus to this plant is that deer, rabbits, gophers, woodchucks, snails, etc. don't bother it. 3 x 3 ft, Z4/5
Lamb's Ear - Stachys byzantina
Very child friendly plant and for the child in each of us. Soft leaves of grey/sage green covered in white fur. In full summer sun flower spikes will rise and bloom with lavender flowers that bees love. Excellent flower and leaves for both fresh and dried arrangements. Can be spreading if your soil is too good (not a problem here!) Does best with neglect and good drainage. Cut off the flower spikes if it is reseeding too well. Divide clumps every year or so to rejuvenate the plant. 2 x 3 ft Z4
Lilacs
Lilac - Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation'
A most popular lilac, Sensation is the only lilac with amazing picoteed edges. The huge clusters of flowers bloom in lilac/purple with a cream edge around each individual flowerette. Wonderful lilac fragrance. Bluish green heart-shaped leaves. Full sun/part sun. Deciduous. Needs some winter chill to bloom well. Occasionally sports white flowers. 10-15 ft, Z3 You can almost smell it in this up-close photo courtesy of Dawn:
Mint 'Chocolate' - Mentha x piperita 'Chocolate'
Luscious large-leaved plant when grown in shade, but will also tolerate sun. 8-10 inches high before it starts to crawl. Best grown in non-porous containers where it can be kept moist and in bounds. The leaves have dark brown veins with a strong chocolate fragrance. Mostly peppermint in taste. Great culinary herb for teas or chocolate baked goods like brownies or peppermint patty cookies. I'm salivating just writing about it! Deer resistant perennial Z4/5.
Penstemon, Dwarf Chocolate
Low, mat-forming hardy Penstemon that sends up 15"- 24" flowering stalks in summer. The flowers are in bunches, purple (at least in our climate and soil) with white hairs in the purple and white pinstriped throats. The undersides show more obvious white stripes. Opposite lance-shaped leaves accompany each opposite cluster of flowers. I do not remember where I got this but the tag read "Rare, Dwarf Chocolate Penstemon". Rare it certainly must be as I cannot find any mention of it anywhere, and I have been unable to match it to any other Penstemon on the Web, Google, Dave's Garden, or Botanica's Garden Encyclopedia! It seems closest to the photos of Whipple's Penstemon that I have seen (native of the USA Southwest). Possibly it is a hybrid of it. If you're a Penstemon-expert I'd love to know your opinion. Unlike our other Penstemons, which are just huge, this is a nice well-mannered dwarf plant at the base of our clothsline accompanying the Feverfew . Z4 would be my guess, if it is related to Penstemon Whippleanus. It gets no special treatment in our silty clay, acid soil, with weekly watering (if it's lucky).
Strawberry, Alpine 'Alexandria' - Fragaria vesca 'Alexandria'
This small alpine variety produces few to no runners so it stays compact in size and is perfect in the border, the rock garden, window box, or a pot. Berries are larger than true wild types, but much smaller than traditional strawberries. In full sun with adequate water they will produce berries either the first Fall or Spring then annually thereafter over a long season. Everbearing perennial. 6" x 6" Z5
